1006 GRIDS ON THE BIRDS
A special congratulations goes out to OPDX's Webmaster John Papay, K8YSE, for reaching 1006 confirmed grids for his satellite VUCC award!
Jacek, SP5APW, is expected to visit Phu Quoc Island (AS-128) between March 7-12th. He has applied for the callsign 3W4JK. Activity will be holiday style on 40-10 meters using SSB, PSK31 and RTTY, with possible operations on 6 meters. He mentions that he will use a Elecraft K3 with microKEYER II and Buddipole antennas. For updates, watch Jacek's Blog page at:
Chas, NK8O/VE3ISD, has traveled to Mwanza on Lake Victoria for several years working there but has never operated any amateur radio from Tanzania. Look for him for the first time to operate as 5H9CP between June 11-22nd. Chas states, "I am primarily a CW operator. QRP and straight key operators, please be ready! After fighting through pile-ups with my QRP station at home, I understand the challenges. The rig on this trip will be an Elecraft KX3 and antenna arrays will depend on the trees, how high I can get the ropes to go, and whether a dipole, loop, or vertical will be the best for the site from which I choose to operate. Times and frequencies will be published (QRZ.com) before my departure for Tanzania, but they definitely will not be written in stone. Operating times will depend entirely on my responsibilities and schedule at the Nyakato Health Center." QSL via NK8O.
Franco, I1FQH, will once again be active from Kpalime Village in central Togo, but this time as 5V7V (last year he was 5V7DX). Activity will be between February 5-17th. Activity will be on 160-6 meters using a 20-10 meters Spiderbeam, and on 160-80m and 40-30m using a homebrew vertical. There was mention that he will have an emphasis on lower bands. His rig will be a K3 w/KL500 solid state amplifier and a Yaesu FT-817 for 6 meters. QSL via the LoTW (preferred) or via his home callsign, direct (w/SASE) or by the Bureau. Visit the 5V7V Web page (with an online log check) at:
Allen, N2KW, will be active as 6Y0A between March 5-23rd, with as much fishing as radio. He tells OPDXX that he will be a serious entry in the Commonwealth Contest [BERU] (March 10-11th). Outside of the contest, his preference is CW, and he will try to work areas that are "propagation challenged" to the Caribbean. QSL via Kappy, WA4WTG. Kappy is a stamp collector, so please put your unwanted stamps in the envelope. Allen will also upload his log to LoTW.

He is expected to use a IC 7000 into a 2 element beam and a fishing rod antenna system on the HF bands. QSL via JA1XGI, direct or by the Bureau. QSOs will be uploaded to LoTW. Haru informs OPDX that he now has a Web page up for his A35XG operation at:

DIAMOND DXCC Challenge
Some have noticed that the current operation from the entity Nauru (C21HA) can not be found on the 1937 ARRL Diamond DXCC entity list -- that is because it is NOT there and will not count toward the award. If you go to the bottom of the January 3, 2012, entity list for the Diamond DXCC Challenge Award, it states - "Note: The intent of this 75th anniversary award is to capture the essence and spirit of the first DXCC List with a fun operating activity that allows us to look back and appreciate the wonderful geography of Amateur Radio. We don't intend to try to fit every existing scrap of land into one of the 1937 entities. Some stations we work today will not count towards any entity from 1937. Nor do some of the places we have chosen to represent a certain entity fully match what existed in 1937." The few glitches initially found were corrected on their January 3, 2012, list. It looks like anything after that will just be ignored. If you can't find it specifically on the January 3, 2012, list, it doesn't count, period.
E5, SOUTH COOK ISLANDS
John, N5JB, will be active as E51NJB from the South Cook Islands (specific island was not provided) between February 13-21st (possibly through the 25th). Valery, R5GA, will be active as FM/R5GA between February 13-20th. Activity will probably be on CW mainly and on 160-10 meters, especially on the 30/17/12 meters. FROZEN NEWS FROM RADIO ARCALA, CR2X, OH8X AND OH0X
Jarmo, OH2BN, sent out the following press release on February 1st: "It is today, February 1st, when the Northern Village of Arcala is gripped by an arctic frost weighing down on the massive antenna structures. The thermometer has hit a 2012 low - an icy reading of minus 27 C (minus 16.6 F) which makes the towers turn rather slowly. Slow are the movements of those frozen people as well.
Radio Arcala has decided to send the Frozen Four (FF) of OH2BH, OH2MM, OH2PM and OH8NC to more southerly latitudes as their balancing act. FF will soon embark on a three week long operating stint taking them to the Azores to activate CR2A and CR2X along with CU2KG and CU2KH in a variety of con- figurations in the ARRL CW & SSB Contests, in addition to the CQWW 160M SSB Contest.
Up in the Frozen North, their mothership OH8X will be piloted by OH6KZP in the ARRL CW Contest and by OH6UM in the ARRL SSB Contest. Moreover, the team of OH6CT, OH8WW, OH8KTN and OH8GDU will be at the controls in the WPX RTTY Contest on February 11-12. Please note that Kim, OH6KZP, 33, is the latest addition to the team at Radio Arcala. See
Additionally, their associate station OH0X from Aland Islands will be activated by Pekka, OH2TA, in the ARRL CW Contest.
As Radio Arcala is now celebrating their 5th anniversary, the WPX SSB Contest of March 24-25 is scheduled to be featured as an all-out team effort when OH8X members, local and overseas, will be gathering at the Northern Village of Arcala to set their strategy for the next few years, using a special callsign to be released at a later date. OH8/CU2CE and OH8/CU2DX will also be activated.
Please note that Radio Arcala is in the process of including a remote station section along with discussing the future of Amateur Radio through their Mission X, both tentatively presented at their website.

As their baggage is very limited, they report that they will only run 100 watts and use a multiband wire antenna from there. Activity is planned for 40-10 meters, mainly on CW. Due to the very limited condition there, they request that only one QSO for each station will be accepted. No multiply contacts with the Futuna Island station please! Also, online log updating will be also provided daily from there. QSL for both FW0NAR and TW0F via Laci HA0NAR. For updates, watch the FW0NAR Blog page at:

As of print time, the final comments by the HK0NA team state that they have worked over 190k QSO.
The HK0NA log shows (per ClubLOG dated Feb. 5th, at 1646z): 192089 Total QSOs and 43176 with Unique Calls. Mode breakdown: 85229/CW, 90775/SSB and 16082/RTTY. Continent breakdown: 1554/AF, 6/ANT, 14207/AS, 78909/EU, 89088/NA, 1480/OC and 6845/SA. Remember, QSL cards will be available four ways:
