The year 2001 has been an interesting and
surprising year for DXers. Let's hope 2002 can be just as great. Anyway,
my family (wife/OPDX's chief proof-reader Linda, Teddy [TJ], Katie) and
I (KB8NW) would like to wish all DXers, Contesters and OPDX readers a
very "Happy New Year". Also, we would like thank the many who have
contributed information over the year (there are too many to list).
REMEMBER, without them there would not be an OPDX Bulletin. I would
also thank the many who sent holiday greetings. I tried to answer some,
and wish I could answer each one of them individually, but it would take

3W, VIETNAM
3W2EA and 3W2FM were active over the past weekend on 15 and
20 meters. On SSB, 3W2EA was heard on 14212 kHz between 1530 and 1700z.
On CW, 3W2FM was heard on 21010 kHz after 0000z.
5N, NIGERIA
Frank, 5N1BHF, has been active on 12 meters (around 24940 kHz)
as early as 1000z and sometimes as late as 1615z. When not on 12 meters
he can also be found on 20 meters (14195 kHz) after 0500z. QSL via OE6LAG.
5N0NHD has also been active on 12 meters (24899 kHz) after 0700. QSL via
JH8BKL.
5R, MADAGASCAR
Solofo/5R8ET and Albert/5R8GZ have both been active on
12 meters. Look for Solofo on 24947 kHz SSB after 1600z. QSL via K1WY.
Watch for Albert on 24902 kHz CW or on 24966 kHz SSB between 1215 and
1530z. QSL via G3SWH.
A6, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
Huraiz, A61AU, has been very active on 20 meters
SSB (above 14200 kHz) usually after 0400z. He was also heard this past
weekend with a huge pile-up on 28500 kHz after 1300z. QSL via direct to:
Huraiz Al Maktoum, P.O. Box 270, Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
C6, BAHAMAS
John, WZ8D, will be active as C6AIE from Abaco (NA-080),
January 1-10th. His main focus for this trip will be to work as many F2
contacts as possible on 6 meters during day time, and he will also put
a lot of effort in making WSJT contacts on 2 meters (144.140 MHz) in the
evenings. However, if 6 meters is not open, John will spend some time on
40-10 meters CW, with some SSB. QSL via home call.
CORRECTIONS TO OPDX.541 AND OPDX.542 (Let's try this again! Third time is
a charm)
Please note in last week's bulletin under "CORRECTIONS" and
the Web site listed under "5U, NIGER (Update)" in OPDX.541 was incorrect.

FR5, REUNION ISLAND
Roland, FR5AB, has been active this past week on
10 meters PSK31 and SSTV. For PSK31, watch 28120 kHz after 1030z. For
SSTV, watch around 28677 kHz after 1100z. He is also active on RTTY on
20 meters after 0230z. Joseph, FR5HA, has also been active on PSK31, but
on 20 meters (14071 kHz) after 1630z and again after 0245z.
HL17, SOUTH KOREA
Lee, DS1BHE, informs OPDX that the Korean Amateur
Radio League (KARL) will operate a special event station with the callsign
HL17FWC which celebrates the 17th FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan, and will be
active from January 1st through May 30th (Just before games start). Also,
KARL will operate DT#FWC (# -- 0 through 9), which celebrates the ten
hosting cities in Korea and will be active from May 31st through June
30th (until the final match). QSL Manager is HL0HQ: KOREAN AMATEUR RADIO
LEAGUE, CPO Box 162, Seoul, KOREA. ADDED NOTE: All the Korean Hams will
change their callsign during the game period (May 31st-June 30th) as the
following:
HL1ABC ---} HL17ABC
DS1ABC ---} DS17ABC/1 (Because they have five DS#ABC)
6K2ABC ---} 6K17ABC/2
DS0AB, 6K0AB, 6L0AB, 6M0AB, D70AB, D80AB .. Club station will change
their 0 (zeros) to 17 (but no need to use " / ").
The KARL is planning to make a special AWARD for this event. Details
will be forthcoming.
IOTA NEWS
AS-079. Takeshi "Take", JI3DST, will be active from Miyako Island
(Miyako-jima Hirara-city Okinawa-ken) as JI3DST/6 now
through January 5th. Activity will be on 40/17/15/12/10/6
meters SSB. QSL via the Bureau (Bureau is best) or direct
to: Takeshi Funaki, 2-18-26 Hannan-Cho Abeno-Ku, Osaka-City,
Osaka 545-0021, JAPAN.
EU-153. Alexander, RX3AJL, will be active from Mudjugsky Island (RR-02-05) as RX3AJL/1 from January 3-5th. His activity will be mainly on 20 meters SSB, with some possible operation on 40 and 80 meters. QSL via home call.
OC-136. Tony, VK3TZ, will be active sporadically from the Phillip Island now through January 26th. His antennas will be either verticals or wire dipoles and the rig will only be a TS-50s. He will try to be active on the usual IOTA frequencies on 10, 15 and 20 meters, and also he will try to check into the ANZA net on 14183 at 0530z. Tony mentions, "As Phillip Island has weak TV reception from the main Melbourne TV stations the TVI is often a very big problem and this may limit operations. I may need to operate from the car in a remote spot to avoid this." QSL for this operation only via the CBA.
JD/O, OGASAWARA
A station signing JE1PIO/JD1 was heard this past weekend
on 40 meters CW (7010 kHz) around 1120z. There are no other details to
report. If someone else has more details on this operator please send it
to OPDX and we will publish it.
KH2, GUAM
Tetus/JF2UED and Mack/JJ2QXI will be active from here between
January 3rd and 5th. They are planning to operate on 160-6 meters, including
the WARC bands, on SSB/CW/RTTY. Mack informs OPDX that he knows KH2 is
not so rare of an entity, but they would like to take as much time as
possible to be on the air based on QSO requests. For any SKED or comments,

QSLs should go to their home callsigns.
LIGHTHOUSE ACTIVITY
USA-592. Look for the "Five Flags Amateur Radio Association" to activate
the Pensacola, Florida, lighthouse on January 1st, as a special
event, using the callsign W4UC. The Amateur Radio Lighthouse
Society (ARLHS) says its research indicates that no Amateur
Radio operations have ever been conducted from the Pensacola
lighthouse which will mark its 143rd anniversary on New Year's
Day. The Coast Guard and U.S. Navy restored the lighthouse and
keeper's quarters in 1994. The special event station will
operate from January 1st, 1400-1800z on 20 and 15 meters.
Operation on 40 meters also is possible. Stations contacting
W4UC at the lighthouse may receive a W4UC special event QSL
card and a Pensacola Lighthouse history brochure in return
for a self-addressed, stamped envelope to KC7DCW.
OA, PERU
Ghis, OA/ON4CD, informs OPDX that he has been in Belgium for
a two week break, but he will return to Peru on January 4th for a one month
stay. He states that he has made more than 3000 QSOs from Peru, mainly
on CW during his free time. His equipment there is a FT-100D (barefoot)
with an ATAS mobile vertical antenna hooked on the roof. He is expected
to be active on 80 meters with a dipole. He advises the ham community
to be patient for the QSLs; they will be printed after he returns to
Europe (February 2002).
P5, NORTH KOREA (Great News)
Toma, YU1AB, informs OPDX that Hrane/YT1AD
and Voja/YU7AV have returned from P5-land (December 26th). He also reports
that they have received a license to operate from P5, together with two
other operators starting March 5th, 2002. In return, Hrane and Voja will
instruct future Korean ham radio operators (a minimum of 20 novice
operators). Their callsigns are not known. More details are forthcoming.
PJ2, CURACAO
Look for Martin, NW0L, to be active from January 2-9th. He
plans to operate in the ARRL RTTY Roundup (January 5-6th), as a Single
Op, High Power, category, as PJ2T. He will be active before and after
the contest using the callsign PJ2/NW0L. QSL PJ2/NW0L via NW0L. QSL
PJ2T via KN7Y.
QSL INFO AND NEWS
Rob, PA5ET, reports that all direct QSLs for the "Caribbean Tour 2001
J3/J8" have now been mailed. He had difficulty getting stamps from the
Post Office for cards being sent outside of Europe since they were
preparing for the new Euro stamps. However, European cards have been
mailed some weeks ago. The cards for outside of Europe, most of them
are from USA and JA, can be expected as of next week as a New Year's
gift.
Douwe, PA1MR, reports that he has been receiving QSLs for PJ4M, who was active in the CQWW Contest, for which he is NOT the QSL Manager. OPDX did a search for PJ4M and could not find any QSN reports or QSL route for this station. We feel that this may have been a busted callsign, and it should have been PJ2M (QSL via KD4D).
Keith, K0KG, reports that he is the QSL Manager for Vlad, UA6JD. He will be setting up a log transfer via E-mail and will print cards in the new year.
Nenad, VE3EXY, informs OPDX that someone has posted him as QSL Manager
for VC7GM, which he is NOT. However, he is the only RAC QSL Bureau
Manager. Nenad has contacted the VC7GM operator and has worked out
the following deal:
- Cards sent to VE3EXY will be sent directly to Mapple Ridge ARC,
who will process them.
- Cards should be sent either via the bureau, or via CBA (Maple
Ridge ARC: P.O. Box 292, Maple Ridge B.C. V2X 7G2, CANADA)
- Any direct QSLs that VE3EXY receives in the future direct, he
will forward to VE7 QSL bureau.

OPDX has been informed that QSLs for ZA1M "DO NOT" go to IK2HTW. This is according to what ZA1M said. QSL direct only.
SLIM ALERT
Raul, LU6EF, informs OPDX that he has been in touch with
Guillermo, LU5DG, and the station operating as VP8/LU5DG in mid-December
was a SLIM. Guillermo requests for the DX community to PLEASE do not
send QSL cards for this operation.
TI, COSTA RICA
Look for Bob/AA1M and Mike/W1USN to be operating from
here February 4-11th. Their callsigns were not provided or bands/modes
of activity. QSL to CBA or via bureau.
TI9, COCOS ISLAND (Update)
Bill, AK0A, reports that there has been a
QSL Manager change for the TI9M DXpedition to Cocos Island scheduled for
February 17th through March 4th. The QSL Manager now is AK0A, Bill
Boeckenhaupt, 8904 Westbrooke Dv, Overland Park, KS 66212 (SASE is
requested. If no SASE, cards will be answered via the Bureau twice a
year). Contributions are accepted to help cover the cost of the DXpedition.
Also, Rob, PA5ET, reports that they now have a new Web site on-line
containing lots of up-to-date information about the upcoming TI9
DXpedition. The URL address is:
VK9M, MELLISH REEF (Update)
Adam, VK4CP (VK9ML Pilot/Webmaster), reports
that the VK9ML team is interested in comments regarding whether they should
run either PSK-31, RTTY, or neither during their DXpedition to Mellish
Reef in April 2002. RTTY and PSK-31 both have pros and cons, and they are
simply asking which mode you would prefer them to operate on. If neither
is desirable, then, of course, they can spend more time concentrating on
CW and SSB operation. Let them know your thoughts in the Poll they are

XU, CAMBODIA
Claude, XU7ABN, was a catch on RTTY this past week. He was
active on 15 meters around 0830z and 20 meters around 1945z.
ZL1AMO HONORED
When Ron Wright, ZL1AMO, returned home from Fuji, he had
a package waiting for him from the Northern Ohio DX Association (NODXA).
After Ron's announcement that he was retiring from traveling to rare
and interesting place for DXpeditions, NODXA sent him a "Lifetime
Achievement Award" plaque to show their appreciation. The NODXA group
never forgot Ron's special visit to a NODXA meeting many years ago in
Cleveland, Ohio, where he put on a slide presentation of his participation
in the "1984 Scientific and Amateur Radio Expedition to the Kermadec
Islands". Congratulations Ron, and thank you for all the new ones you
gave all of us to put in our logs.
ZL, NEW ZEALAND
Look for the Hamilton Amateur Radio Club to be active
using the callsign ZL6JAM during and after the "16th New Zealand Scout
Jamboree" at Mystery Creek Hamilton now through January 6th. The station
will be active from this site from 2000-0500z during this period, and
outside these hours if possible. As this station is being set up for
Scouts (both boys and girls aged 11 to 16), these kids would love to
talk to kids around their own age, as well as Hams from around the world.
The frequencies planned are: 3593, 3677, 7075 and 14260 kHz. They will
be as near as possible to those frequencies. The 15 and 10 meter bands
will be used depending on conditions. A special QSL card is being printed
for the Jamboree. QSL details are direct with 1 IRC or 1 USD with a SAE
to: ZL6JAM, P O Box 606, Hamilton, New Zealand.
