KH4, MIDWAY ISLAND
It was announced this past week by Tom/N4XP and Dave/WB4JTT (edited): "A multi-national team of 19 operators will activate Midway Island in October 2009. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USF&WLS) has authorized amateur operation from this rare U.S. entity for only a 10 day period, its first radio activity in almost 10 years.
Midway Island ranks number 24 worldwide and number 13 in Europe on the DX Magazine's "Most Wanted List". Activity will be on 6 meters to 160 meters with 5 to 6 stations. At least one station will be active on 20 meters around the clock for those who need it for a new country. Major efforts will be made to meet the demand to the most needed geographical areas, the low bands and RTTY.
Team members are Joe/AA4NN, Carlos/EA1IR, Franz/DJ9ZB, Kimo/KH7U, Antoinette/KI6TVS, Jon/KL2A, Don/N1DG, Paul/N4PN, Tom/N4XP, Jeff/N6GQ, John/N7CQQ, Dave/WB4JTT, Charlie/W6KK, Bruce/W6OSP, Art/WA7NB, Janet/W8CAA, Joe/W8GEX, Byron/WA8NJR and Vrata/OK1KT. Off site support is being provided by Don/AA1V, Dan/W5DNT and Paul/W6XA. Travel to Midway is only allowed by chartered aircraft. Because of the size of the aircraft, the team is presented with unique challenges. As such, the aircraft will only be able to carry the team requiring the equipment to be shipped by boat some months ahead. Adding to the high cost of transportation, daily fees and other charges established by the USF&WLS makes this operation very expensive. A Web site has been established and can be found at:
Members of the Strumblehead DX and Contest Group will be on the air from their headquarters at the Farm in Wales for a period before, during and after the CQ WPX SSB Contest (March 28-29th). They will be using the club callsigns MC0SHL before the contest with some activity on 30 meters RTTY around 10148 kHz. During the contest they will be using both MW9W and MC0SHL - depending on the number of operators, there may be more callsigns on air. Please QSL via the club's manager M0URX. (ODXG), reports on Sunday, March 15th: "We have now established that we will have live internet on the island which should be 24/7. There have been many queries since we devised a list of sunrise/sunset times for grey line propagation. We will have an operator on every low band every day whilst we are in darkness.
We also expect huge openings on 30m the same as K5D did. With our station separation we should be able to run 2 stations simultaneously to maximize openings......Cu in the pile ups."

Operators George/AA7JV and Tomi/HA7RY are expected to be active as VK9GMW next week (possibly between March 22nd and April 6th) in what they call "another low-key, simple DXpedition".
PLEASE NOTE that the dates are approximate and may change due to weather. The operation will have a strong low-band focus, although VK9WMW will operate on all HF bands. From their Web page, George reports from Airlie Beach, Queensland, Australia, (Sunday, March 15th):

WH6, HAWAII (Very Rare County)
Attention county hunters! It was announced at the Maui Amateur Radio Club (MARC) this past week that the extremely rare Kalawao County will be activaed on 40 and 20 meters, March 30-31st. MARC member, Jayson Kohama, WH6BXK, is expected to work there on those particular days. After he gets off work each day, he plans to be on HF making as many contacts as possible.
His station, WH6BXK, will be on the air each day after 1800 local (6:00 pm or 0400z). He will be on 7188 kHz and 14335 kHz. Kalwao County is one of the rarest USA counties. It is the 2nd smallest county and the poorest in the USA. It is located on the Kalaupapa peninsula, on the island of Molokai. It is the old Hawaiian leper colony. Because it was a leper colony, it was totally isolated from the rest of the islands and had its own separate county government, which was administered by the state. Hams must have special permission to go there and operate. Thus it is extremely rare for any ham signals to ever radiate from Kalawao.

The final logs have been uploaded to the Web site. Please QSL direct via Lee, ZL2AL: 87 Auckland Road, Greenmeadows, Napier 4112, NEW ZEALAND. For a direct response, you must enclose a self-addressed envelope (SAE) and at least 2 USDs or 1 IRC to cover the return postage, otherwise they will respond via the Bureau system.
