TAKE A MINUTE TO REMEMBER THEM THIS WEEKEND!
If you haven't heard, four radio amateurs were killed in plane crash while enroute to operate in the CQWW DX SSB Contest from Crooked Island, Bahamas. The tragedy happened just after take-off, around 6:30 AM on Wednesday, October 21st, when the twin-engine Piper PA-23 plane carrying the four contesters crashed into the woods only 250 yards off the end of the runway in Jedburg, South Carolina, about 20 miles northwest of Charleston. The four radio amateurs were:

Peter Radding/W2GJ (C6APR) SK - North Charleston, SC; Pilot/Owner
James "Randy" Hargenrader/K4QO (C6AQO) SK - Summerville, SC
Edwin F Steeble/K3IXD (C6AXD) SK - Summerville, SC
E. Dallas Carter/W3PP SK - Laurel, DE
Details about this tragedy can be found on the Web at:
http://www.journalscene.com/news/Plane-crashes-at-Summerville-Airport
http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2009/10/21/11157/?nc=1

* Since their signal will be missing during the CQWW DX SSB Contest, OPDX is requesting/suggesting (out of respect and memory) that the contesters world-wide take a pause for 1 minute (complete silence on the bands for the one missing station; 15 seconds for each "SK" operator) from 0000-0001z, Sunday, October 25th. PLEASE, pass the word around.... OPDX and its readers would like to send out deepest sympathy to the family and many friends of the above Silent Keys...

* C6APR Memorial CQWW SSB Station. It was announced that in memory of C6APR, the Trident Amateur Radio Club (TARC) will be operating the CQWW SSB Contest using the clubs callsign N4EE. They will be operating a single station out of W3VT in Summerville, SC, on 75m, 40m, and 20m, other bands as conditions permit. Frequencies and times will be published at a later time. A special QSL card will be made to memorial- ize the C6APR team's accomplishments and tragic loss. Please join them during this weekend's contest to remember their fallen friends and pass on condolences to their families. Charleston area hams are invited to assist with operations. Please contact W3VT for info. QSL will be direct with SASE - For LoTW and EQSL confirmation please note on QSL. Condolences thread can be found here:

A35, TONGA (News and Contest Ops)
Paul Kidd, well-unknown as A35RK, informs OPDX that he has been thinking about if-and-when to use his special A35A. Paul states,

"I had the initial impression that A35A was restricted to contest/special event use. But that's not the case....it's a regular every-day callsign, now that the rules have been changed. I had a chat this morning with Fe'ao Vakata (the radio licensing officer) about this, and here's what he said: It is his intention to issue A31x callsigns for visiting contest and special event operations. Basically, that prefix block is reserved for 'groups', not individuals. The A31xx block is reserved for other short-term visitors, yachties, etc. The A35x and A35xx blocks are intended for resident operators, like me. When he issued me the A35A license, it was with the understanding that I could use it any way I choose....as a 'regular' call, or as a special event/contest call. Fe'ao said that it's entirely up to me, and he has no objections to my using it anyway I want to. Therefore.....Effective immediately, A35A will be my 'fulltime' callsign....for DXing, contests, ragchewing, the whole coconut. HI......
