1A0KM WRAP-UP
Luca, IK5HHA, one of the 1A0KM guest operators, informs OPDX that they made 11995 QSOs during their Sovereign Military Order of Malta operation. The breakdown is 5381/CW, 6184/SSB and 430/RTTY QSOs. By the time you read this, logs should be uploaded to LoTW.

4A, REVILLAGIGEDO
Santos, EA4AK, sent out a press release announcing a DXpedition to Revillagigedo (XF4) during March. The assigned callsign will be 4A4A. The DXpedition's Web site is: http://www.revillagigedo2011.com The team leader and DXpedition organizer is Marcos, XE1B, and the QSL Manager is David, EB7DX . Confirmation will only be DIRECT and LoTW. A team of 9 operators will operate from "Isla Socorro" (officially "Benito Juarez" Island) between March 3-20th.

The island's reference numbers are: IOTA NA-030, WAZ Zone 6, ITU Zone 10, Grid Locator DK48MS and located -approx- at Longitude 111º West and Latitude 18º 46´ North. Sunrise will be around 1320z and Sunset around 0100z. Currently the team consists of Marcos/XE1B (Team Leader/SSB), Santos/EA4AK (Logistic/SSB), Vicente/EA5AFP (CW), Fernando/EA5FX (CW), Francisco/EA5KM (CW), Javier/EC4DX (SSB), Edu/EA8AUW (SSB/Digi) and Alejandra Ortiz (Geology - Photography). Activity will be on 160-10 meters, possibly 6 meters, using CW, SSB and the Digital modes. They plan to have a CW team and a SSB team operating simultaneously on the air at all times. Yagis will be used for the higher bands and verticals for the lower bands. Efforts are being made to bring some linear amplifiers to the island.

Santos, EA4AK, states, "Because propagation conditions are still low or average we must make a special effort to optimize the DX windows. I have prepared some 'propagation movies' (one for each band) for Revillagigedo to help those with less experience estimating the best times/bands to work 4A4A. The press release also mentions: "The licenses and permits for the 4A4A DXpedition have taken long time to obtain due to the complexity of this archipelago. Revillagigedo is a natural reserve, a protected reserve of the biosphere. Only visits or expeditions of scientific nature are permitted by the relevant Mexican authorities (a prestigious Mexican geologist will travel with the team to perform studies of natural life interest while 4A4A is running). Also, it is an emplacement of military interest, and tightly under the control and supervision of military authorities. These two permits from those two mentioned authorities are absolutely necessary before proceeding to request an amateur radio operating license to the telecommunications authorities." This 4A4A DXpedition is exclusively financed by the personal financial effort of the team of operators. The team is looking for some support from sponsors, clubs or other organizations. CR3/CT9, MADEIRA ISLANDS
Operators Ulf/DL5AXX, Tom/DL5LYM, Jan/DL7JV, Frank/DL8WAA and Falk/DK7YY will be active as CR3L from Santana, Madeira Island (AF-014) during the ARRL DX CW Contest (February 19-20th) as a Multi-2 entry. DX0, SPRATLY ISLANDS
Chris, VK3FY, is reporting on DX-World.Net (edited):

"We are hoping that the weather improves in the South China Seas so that we can board the ship which will take four operators to Pag-Asa. As this is a scouting trip, operating time on the island will be limited to a few hours to 3 days. The time on the island will be utilized in taking pictures of prospective sites and time permitting getting DX0DX on the air. This is a prelude to the April operation. QSL will be as per DX0DX via Bob N2OO. As we are guests on this vessel, we have no control over its departure, schedule or time it is allotted at Spratly."

EA8, CANARY ISLANDS
Per, LA5EAA, will be active as EA8/LA5EAA between February 13-26th. Activity during the first week will be from the Island La Gomera (DIE S-014, WLOTA 1526), and the second week from the Island of Tenerife (DIE S-012, WLOTA 1276). Both islands are IOTA AF-004). He plans to operate holiday style using an Yaesu FT-817 transceiver (5w QRP) and wire antennas on the HF bands, mainly CW. QSL via his home callsign.

FRENCH EXPEDITION TO ANTARCTICA
Mehdi, F5PFP, will once again head south to the Antarctic waters sailing on a yacht on a 6 week voyage. He departs from Ushuaia on February 14th. His itinerary (as he puts it) is as follows: "Beagle channel islands: the Drake, then it will depend of the sailing conditions, impossible to give you an order. South Shetland Islands; West Graham land; Palmer Islands; Biscoe Islands; Adelaide Island; Marguerite Bay; back via the Melchior islands. Callsigns mentioned are FT5YK/p, VP8DLM and CE9XX (he is waiting for an Argentine callsign also. Radio operations will be mostly between 2200-0200z on 40 meters SSB and possibly earlier sometime on 20 meters. Equipment is an IC-706, FT-897 and an IC 2KL amp. Antennas are a 1/4 wave vertical for 40m and a 1/4 wave vertical for 20m.

HE3, SWITZERLAND (Special Event)
Members of the Rav Radio Amateurs of Vaudios (HB9MM) will activate the special callsign HE3OM from Sottens during the month of February. Sottens is a small village where the last medium waves transmitter active in Switzerland was located. It stopped its emissions on December 31st, 2010, at 2359 local time. Permission has been granted to the "Radioamateurs Vaudois" club to use the 2 giant antennas for amateur purposes. The callsign HE3OM was chosen for the following reasons:
     * The prefix HE3 has already been used in 2004, when the shortwave transmitter in Sottens went off the air. At that time the special callsign was HE3RSI.
     * The suffix OM in French means Ondes Moyennes, mediumwaves.
     * Also, OM are the initials of Option Musique, the last program that was transmitted over these big antennas.
The tallest antenna, 188 meters high, is used on the HF bands, especially the lower bands like 160m and 80m. The "small" mast, 125 meters high is connected to the VLF station transmitting on the 137 kHz amateur band. QSL HE3OM via HB9TOB. For more details, see:

IOTA NEWS
NA-193. Operators John/VE8EV and Gerry/VE8GER are currently planning a 5-7 day operation to Tent Island in the Yukon Territory Group during late April (over the Easter holiday - dates to be finalized at the end of March). Tentative callsign will be XK1T. Activity will be a high-power/yagi operation, mostly 20 meters, mostly SSB (but likely more CW than previous trips) with the goal of putting NA-193 into as many logs as possible in NA, Europe, and Asia. J6, ST. LUCIA
Operators Volkmar/DF2SS and Marc/DL1VKE are now active as J6/DF2SS and J6/DL1VKE from St. Lucia (NA-108) until February 17th. Activity will be on all HF bands using CW, SSB and RTTY. QSL via their home callsign, direct or by the Bureau.

KH0, MARIANA ISLANDS
Members of the Mariana Friendship Club (WH0SS) will be activatings W0S from Saipan (OC-086, USI NI002S, WLOTA 1333) between February 15-22nd, to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of the international exchange program between Seisa Group (Japan) and Marianas High School (Saipan CNMI). Since 1986, more than 7000 students from Japan to Saipan and more than 1000 students from Saipan to Japan crossed the ocean to participate in this incomparable and fruitful program. This operation is also one of the activities of "Foundation with Global Children" and "International NGO Seisa-Lotus (provisional name)" aiming for the advance- ment of education and medical care to children worldwide.

The operating site will be the Saipan World Resort, Saipan, Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). KH0, MARIANA ISLANDS

T30, WESTERN KIRIBATI (Update/Reminder)
Operators Bill/N7OU and Bob/W7YAQ are expected to once again team up for another operation in the Pacific this week, but this time from Tarawa Island (OC-017) between February 8-22nd. Bill will sign T30OU and Bob will sign T30YA. Activity will be on 160-10 meters using mostly CW with some SSB and RTTY, and using 100 watts and vertical antennas. They will also be in the ARRL DX CW Contest (February 19-20th) as a Multi-Single entry and signing T30YA. QSL via their home callsigns. T32, CHRISTMAS ISLAND (Update)
Don Field, G3XTT, FSDXA Publicity Officer, has sent out a press release (Bulletin #2) from the Five Star DXers Association (FSDXA) with updates on their T32C DXpedition to Kiritimati (Christmas Island) that will take place between September 27th and October 25th. The release states that the "T32C" callsign is now confirmed and has been issued. This took a little time to arrange, as single letter suffixes are not normally issued by the Kiribati Government. It was also mentioned that their 40 member team is now almost complete, and they are especially delighted to welcome young amateur Michael Zürch, DG1CMZ, whose participation is possible thanks to an anonymous sponsor. Michael is a 25-year old from Thuringia, Germany. He was first licensed at the age of 14 and is a keen contester and DXer.

The UK-based members of T32C have had several preparatory sessions to clean up and refurbish kit from their previous operations as well as building and testing equipment which they will be using for the first time (for example, new 4-square antennas for both 40 and 30m, and vertical arrays for the high bands, to complement their existing Yagis). Some photos of these activities appear on the Web site. They have also been getting to know the FT-5000 radios of which they will have 16 with them on T32 along with Quadra linear amplifiers. Several pallets of gear are now ready to be transferred to the shipping container which they expect to leave the UK in late February from where it will travel via Singapore to Fiji, arriving in Suva in April or early May for onward shipping to T32. They have also added a GPS tracker in the container so that they can follow the progress of their kit as it makes its way to the island! VISALIA DX CONVENTION (Top-Band Banquet)
Steve, WB6RSE, reports that the 2011 Top-Band Dinner Banquet at the Visalia DX Convention is now open for reservations. It will take place on Friday, April 15th, at 6:30 PM. The location is the Convention Hotel, Holiday Inn, Visalia CA. The program will be: "The Low Bands from VP8ORK South Orkneys". There will be door prizes. The menu will be the "Miner 49er BBQ Buffet Dinner. No host bar." The cost is 37 USDs/person. VK0/H, HEARD ISLAND
Carl, N4AA, editor of QRZ DX, reports that Chris/ VK3FY and Steve/VK6IR are co-leaders in planning for a DXpedition to Heard Island in February of 2013. They are proposing a 13 member team for a two week operation. The estimated cost for this operation is around 500,000 USDs. They are expected to put a Web page online to keep everyone informed. Last operation from Heard Island was back in 1997. The latest ranking by "DX Magazine's Most Wanted Survey" is #5 world-wide.

VP8O, SOUTH ORKNEY ISLANDS
Members of the Microlight Penguins continue to be active as VP8ORK from Signy Island (AN-008) until February 8th. As this was being written, the VP8ORK log shows (at 0658z, February 5th) that they have made 51979 QSOs with 15122 unique callsigns (34085/CW, 14548/SSB and 3346/RTTY). ZF2, CAYMAN ISLAND (Satellites, Grids, HF and Contesting)
Adrian, AA5UK, will be operating as ZF2AE from Grand Cayman and ZF2AE/ZF8 from Little Cayman between March 25th and April 2nd. He plans to operate during the CQ WPX SSB Contest (March 26-27th) on Little Cayman, on 40-10 meters using a IC-7000 and vertical antenna. Current plans are to operate holiday style outside the contest on SSB, RTTY, PSK31 and the satellites (AO-51, SO-50, VO-52 and FO-29). Most activity will be in the afternoons and evenings. ZL50, NEW ZEALAND (Special Events)

ZS8, MARION ISLAND (Update)
Pierre, ZS1HF/ZS8M, continues to be active most days, mainly 20/17 meters SSB. Pierre has released another newsletter from Marion Island, where he provides more great pictures, along with more details about the island happenings and activities on the island. He also has a section in his newsletter called "Humans and seals do not mix!!!" If you have a weak stomach, you may not want to see these pictures. Pierre states that during breeding season the seals become extremely aggressive. Someone found out and got 25 stitches later! 1. Our Polar Supply ship will be arriving on 15 March with a team of maintenance people. At this stage I assume my operation will be down scaled, especially the SSB operation.
2. The ship returns to Cape Town on 19 April to collect the new team, including fuel and food for the next year.
3. The ship departs Cape Town on 5 April for Marion Island and arrives 11 April with the new team.
4. I expect the ZS8M operation will cease officially on 11 April 2011.
