FIELD DAY RECORDINGS (recorded at the home QTH on autopilot)

The satellites were very busy during field day with a lot of "noise" when so many stations were transmitting at the same time. The birds are full quieting; the noise you hear is not from a weak satellite signal but rather the combination of many transmitting at the same time. The FM birds were difficult but workable, especially if you could work them when they were out over the Atlantic or just coming up over the horizon. Once they got over the population centers, it was almost impossible to get through. The linear birds were much more productive. If you have doubts about your contact, these recordings might ease your mind. For those of you who are not familiar with satellites and think that you don't want any part of them because of what you heard on field day, just imagine what it would be like if there were only one frequency that you could use on 20m for field day. It's not anything like this unless there is something exciting like a dxpedition etc. If this were easy, everyone would be doing it. The challenge is what makes ham radio interesting. If you want to have a 10 minute qso, try the linear birds; if you want to work grids for your VUCC, the FM birds work very well for short exchanges. Enjoy the hobby!
