1A4, SMOM (Reminder/Update)
Just a reminder that the Amateur Radio Station of S.M.O.M. (Sovereign Military Order of Malta) will be active this week with a new prefix. Look for 1A4A to be active between January 2-8th. The operators will be Giorgio/IZ4AKS, Cortesi/IZ4DPV, Fabio/I4UFH, Gabriele/ IK4UPB and Luca/IW0DJB (HV5PUL). Activity will be on 160-2 meters, SSB/ CW/RTTY mode. Three stations will be active at same time, especially looking for DX areas such as Japan, South America and West Coast. Emphasis will be on the low bands. An interesting activities chart is available on the Web at:
Champ, E21EIC, is expected to be in Hanoi December 31st and stay until January 7th. Watch the bands.... You never know.
Dag, LA9SDA, from Tromso, northern Norway, is now active as 3Y9SDA from the Troll Station in the Antarctica. His activity will last until sometime in January 2007. Operations will be mostly on 20 meters, SSB and PSK.
Vlad, UA4WHX, is currently active as 5H3VMB/5 from the Lindi/MTWARA Region Group (AF-074). This is a rare IOTA and as usual, the length of stay is not known. He has been active on 80/40/30/20 meters CW, and on Sunday he was on 17 meters SSB. QSL via UA4WHX, direct or by the bureau.
Giovanni, IZ2DPX, informs OPDX that he will be active in the month of May. Callsign and specific dates are forthcoming. Activity will be on 160/80/40/20/17/15/12/10 meters. He will use a Kenwood TS-870 with 3 element monobands for 20, 15 and 10 meters, and a Titanex for the low bands. Giovanni will continue his African tour after this operation and head to the Island of Santiago and the city Praia. More later.
Stig, LA7JO, Regional Telecoms Officer for the UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia (ROSA), continues to be very active from Kathmandu as 9N7JO. He has been active on 80/40/30/12 meters CW as well as 20/17/15 meters PSK. A few reports indicate that he will be "active from Nepal 'on and off' at various periods during 2007." Your editor received the following surprising E-mail from ARRL Membership Services Manager Wayne Mills, N7NG, late Saturday afternoon, December 30th:
"On Thursday, December 14, 2006, much to my regret, I delivered a letter of resignation to David Sumner, K1ZZ. Such an early departure had not been my plan but had become necessary. On Friday, in a meeting with Dave and Mr. Harold Kramer, ARRL Chief Operating Officer (COO), I made it clear, when asked, that my resignation was in no way a retirement. I also conveyed that it did not indicate any fundamental differences with ARRL outside of the jurisdiction of Mr. Kramer. I offered them the opportunity to release information about my resignation, but Mr. Kramer could send only a terse two-line message, and then only to the HQ Staff and the closed reflector of the ARRL Officers, Directors and Vice Directors, hence this message.DX0, SPRATLY ISLANDS
All in all, it's been a fun six and one-half years. The League has been a great place to work, and I'd do all but the last 22 months over again. I thank all of you around the World for your great support. In particular, I offer special thanks to our volunteers - advisory committee members, log checkers and advisors. I also urge all of you to support the ARRL financially. Be sure to tell them what you want, though - they don't always ask. I hope to regenerate an active interest in Ham Radio back in Wyoming. Maybe there'll be another DXpedition or two as well, and look for N7NG - Jackson Hole - to be an active Wyoming contributor to LoTW as long as it's in business.
..... 73, Wayne, N7NG Jackson Hole, Wyoming"
